WHAT CAUSES CONDENSATION FORMATION

Condensation is caused by excessive moisture trapped in the internal environment. Moisture in the internal enviroment is caused by simply occupying the space and undertaking normal everyday activities like cooking, showering, washing clothes, breathing etc. As the air temperature cools overnight, the moisture vapour in the air falls from the internal atmosphere and condensates on the coldest and stillest surfaces in the room. Often these will be external walls, windows, behind furniture, inside cupboards etc - everywhere where the surface is cold and there is little air movement.

HOW TO ELIMINATE CONDENSATION

Condensation is simply the result of excessive moisture trapped in the internal environment. As the temperature cools overnight, the internal atmosphere can no longer sustain the cooling moisture and it falls from the internal atmosphere and condensates on the coldest and stillest surfaces in the room. Condensation is resolved by the following three elements, all of which are vitally important to condensation control. In ascending order of importance:

1. Air movement - Air movement, whilst important, is the least important of the three elements. It is common for mould to develop in cupboards or behind furniture where there is little air movement. How can you increase air movement? Ceiling fans are really worthwhile and should be operated all year round.
2. Heat - Heat is the second most important element. Heated air is capable of carrying in suspension more moisture than colder air. Once the temperature drops below the dew point (a fluctuating temperature which can be revealed on line in real time) the internal atmosphere can no longer suspend the moisture vappour and it then condensates on the coldest and stillest surfaces. By maintaining the temperature above the dew point, you dramatically reduce the onset of condensation.
3. Ventilation - Ventilation is the key to reducing condensation and therefore mould. Removing moisture laden internal air and replenishing it with fresh external air can often resolve the issue on its own. Often this can simply mean opening windows and doors more often, even in winter. Air flow aids in the removal of all kinds of airborne, harmful pollutants from the internal atmosphere and it is only a benefit. Some people argue that heat loss and additional cost is associated with increasing ventilation, but that is a small price to pay for increasing the health of the bwelling and its occupants.
