In the modern world, builders and planners have forgotten about the benefits of ventilation, allowing buildings to be shut up with no means to naturally ventilate themselves. As a result, there are hundreds of buildings in Melbourne which suffer from condensation issues (and therefore mould) in the winter months.Ventilation is the most important of the three elements which will reduce trapped moisture in the internal environment and eliminate mould growth. In the colder months it can admittedly be difficult to maintain natural ventilation by opening windows and doors - and often natural ventilation is just not enough to eliminate condensation. In this instance, mechanical ventilation will resolve internal moisture issues.
Our mould and condensation reports can provide the property owner with the blueprint to increase ventilation and eliminate condensation and therefore mould.
Older properties have vents in each room to promote the exchange of air from inside to out. Modern properties no longer have vents in the external walls, to save energy costs, and modern buildings are often not naturally ventilated at all. Natural ventilation is as simple as opening windows and doors more often, opening blinds and curtains. Sometimes just increasing natural ventilation will be enough (combined with the other two elements required to eliminate condensation) to reduce internal moisture enough to halt condensation formation in the internal environment.
Mechanical Condensation involves installing internal mechanical ventilation - through walls or ceiling - which draws air and moisture from the internal atmosphere and exhausts it outside. These fan based systems are usually controlled via digital timers. Often the systems can also introduce extrnal air into the internal atmosphere and sophisticated systems can also re introduce heated air, saving on energy costs.
Subfloor ventilation is extremely beneficial for the health of any building as it removes moisture laden air from the subfloor void, but it will not resolve any internal atmospheric imbalances.
Dehumidifiers are an effective (if noisy) alternative to mechanical ventilation. They work by converting moisture vapour from the internal atmosphere into moisture which is then expelled into a drainage point. Generally speaking they are only suitable for a single room so if the issue is throughout the dwelling, several of them amy be required. And unless a commercial dehumidifier is used, they need to be manually emptied, which can be an inconvenience.

If you reduce the moisture trapped in the internal environment, mould growth will stop.
